There was good news and bad news generated by Mooresville High School’s golf team in its season-opening match late last week.
The good was that the visiting Blue Devils mustered up a second-place finish in the nine-hole and non-conference affair held at nearby Mallard Head Country Club near Troutman. The bad was that there were only two teams in attendance.
The Devils kept matters close but came up just over par in dropping a 162-165 decision to the host Vikings of South Iredell in the two-team affair.
As is the case with all golf matches, teams combine the four lowest scorers for a stroke total. The goal in golf is to come up with a lower total than all others in the field.
For Mooresville, it came close but just missed that mark.
In what was the Blue Devils’ lone scheduled outing prior to teeing it up for real in the first North Piedmont Conference competition of the not-quite-spring season early next week, they wound up just the three strokes short of sitting alongside the host Vikes with the clubhouse lead.
In so doing, the guests were paced in the scoring department by the 40 posted by team medalist Ian Harper that came within a single stroke somewhere on the front side of the host MHCC site of tying for overall low-man honors.
Also for the Devils, using their scores to kick in to the team’s total included the pair of 41’s carded by both Jordan Shoaf and Matthew Beaver to go along with the 42 turned in by Josh Nelson.
South Iredell made its way to the team first-place finish on the strength of overall medalist Clay Brown’s score of 39. Also for the victors, they put into play the 40’s each carved out by the twosome of Jonathan Rife and Mark Powell to join the 43 fashioned by Hunter Mitchell that rounded out the contributing scores.
Mooresville will remain in practice mode until kicking off the NPC season in a match along with all other nine league entries taking place on host North Iredell’s home Twin Oaks Golf Course near Statesville early next week.
