MOORESVILLE — One top athlete had the meet of his life at Tuesday’s Iredell County track and field championships while the other used it as a test run for the 3A state meet.

Behind Most Outstanding Field Athlete Jamel Allison and Most Outstanding Track Athlete Patrick Campbell, Mooresville’s boys team won its third consecutive county championship with yet another dominant performance.

“It always feels good,” Campbell said with a grin. “Three in a row is nice, and we all ran well.”

Allison and Campbell each earned the maximum 40 points with four first-place finishes as the Blue Devils racked up 246½ points on the strength of 13 first-place finishes.

“Both really shined,” Mooresville coach Michael Serefine said. “Jamel was on. That was the best combined jump day he’s ever had. And, honestly, we used this day for Patrick as a workout to get him ready to run those events in the state meet.”

Allison set two personal bests with a triple jump of 49 feet and a long jump of 24 feet, 4 inches and also won the high jump and was a member of the winning 4x100-meter relay team.

Campbell set the pace early, helping the Blue Devils win the first boys event of the day, the 4x800-meter relay. He also won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

“This is one meet we circle on our schedule at the beginning of the year,” Serefine said. “It’s a championship. County, conference, regionals and state; those are the four we really get excited about.”

Mooresville also got 20 points from Jake Deaton, who took first place in the shot put and discus.

Lake Norman emerged from a three-school crowd to take second place, the highest finish in program history.

The Wildcats’ 80 points were just enough to outlast Statesville (77 points) and South Iredell (67½ points). West Iredell was fifth with 40 points and North Iredell tallied 39.

“South Iredell was up by a half-point with three events left,” Wildcats coach Jay Keener said. “J.Q. Brantley beat out their high jumper to get second place, and we placed two in the two-mile. I think that put us over the top.”

Lake Norman won the 4x200-meter relay and had three second-place finishes.

Statesville’s Curtis Nesbitt won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.3 seconds and Sam Hughes cleared 12 feet on the pole vault.

West Iredell’s Mark Barber won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.8 seconds while South Iredell’s Markevis Dalton’s time of 52.91 seconds made him a winner in the 400-meter run.
