Mooresville tennis looks at non-conference foes as practice

According to the thinking of Mooresville Senior High’s boys tennis team, playing tougher competition during the non-conference portion of play can only make it better.
That’s the belief the Blue Devils put on the court in splitting their first two matches of the season against top-notch talent.
Christening both the season and the at-home segment of the schedule, the Devils gathered enough wins in singles and then tacked on the final remaining point they needed during the doubles to squeeze past a late-arriving St. Stephens crew, 5-4, on the courts adjacent to the Mooresville Middle School campus.
Later, and also at home, an anticipated tough-to-beat Newton-Conover squad lived up to that billing as the host Devils managed a mere lone win in singles play during the course of an 8-1 defeat.
“We’ve just got to get better,’’ noted returning head coach Tim Smith, back in the team’s camp. “One of the ways we can do that is by playing better competition. I made our schedule out with that in mind.”
At home to begin play against St. Stephens, a near hour longer wait than expected for the match to take place found the hosts banging out wins in four of the six singles sessions to close in on a win and then claim the one more win they needed in the doubles to pull out the decision.
In singles play, picking up the wins for Mooresville were Marshall Horsman, Jordan Willis, David Smith and Erik Conley.
Needing just one more win to lock up the issue, the Devils got that during the doubles segment courtesy of the duo of Matthew Smith and Willis.
At home to entertain Newton-Conover, the home team struggled to get points, their lone team mark in the win column carved courtesy of unbeaten singles player Horsman.
Mooresville is idle all of this week before getting back on the court to again play at home against yet another expected state power in Hickory early next week.
