More money on the line in race

Mooresville-area drivers competing in the current Bank of America 500 Week schedule of events at Lowe’s Motor Speedway will be among those in the battle for the lion’s share of a record $6.5 million purse.

The $6,526,587 in posted prize money and awards is $128,806 more than was up for grabs in the same events last year and represents a 166-percent increase over the $2.4 million drivers raced for just 10 years ago.

With assistance from defending Bank of America 500 winner Kasey Kahne, H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway, unveiled the record purse at a Bank of America Banking Center in Charlotte by making a ceremonial transfer of funds using NASCAR Banking, a suite of new NASCAR-licensed check cards, checks and credit cards designed by Bank of America specifically for race fans.

“Great race car drivers thrive under pressure and we certainly have all the ingredients for four intense nights of action,” Wheeler said. “In addition to this record prize money, the NEXTEL Cup championship battle is as close as ever and there are also several drivers fighting to stay in the top 35 in points. Then, add in the guys who are trying to keep or secure rides for next season, and we have the perfect recipe for tremendous racing.”

The Bank of America 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race Saturday night will be worth a record $5,185,067, an increase of $106,596 over last October’s race.

Featuring more than 20 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup drivers battling the Busch Series regulars, competitors in the Dollar General 300 on Friday night will be chasing $1,268,191 in posted prize money and awards, an increase of $24,460 from last year.

Tickets for all Bank of America 500 Week events are still available by calling 1-800-455-FANS or online at http://www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.
