Nelson claims top honor, signs to play in college
By BRAD NORMAN
It was a pretty good week for Mooresville golfer Josh Nelson.
First, Nelson continued his torrid shooting late in the season at the North Piedmont 3A championship match.
He carded a 74, which was enough to claim the NPC’s individual title for the second consecutive year.
Nelson trailed Lake Norman’s Will Cotter in the standings for much of the season but shot a 37 or better in four of his final five NPC matches to vault to the top.
“I started striking the ball a lot better of the tees,” Nelson said. “I just kept it down the middle.”
At the end of his late-season surge, Nelson signed with Brevard College to play golf.
“I liked the area, and I really liked the coach,” Nelson said. “I liked that they were in the rebuilding process, and I could make an immediate impact at their school.”
Nelson also has his eyes on medalist honors at Tuesday’s Iredell County golf championships.
“Hopefully I can play good, a little better than I did last year,” Nelson said. “I just didn’t have anything fall.”
