BOYS GOLF: 3A Midwest Regional

Nelson earns a spot in state golf tournament

FROM STAFF REPORTS
Mooresville’s Josh Nelson broke through Monday, clinching a berth in the 3A state tournament with his play in the Midwest Regional at Jamestown Park Golf Course.

Southeast Guilford finished with a team score of 299 to get the victory. Hickory was second at 306, with Ragsdale third at 315. That beat out Lake Norman by a single stroke, leaving the Wildcats golfers, along with those from Mooresville, Statesville and eight other teams, vying for three individual spots in the state tourney.

Nelson shot a 76, leaving him in a three-way tie with Lake Norman’s Greg Simms and Southwest Guilford’s Gray Depasquale for the final two individual spots. Nelson locked up one berth by making a bogey on the first playoff hole, while the other two made double bogeys.

Simms and Depasquale went on for a few more holes before Depasquale finally clinched the final individual spot.

Kernersville Glenn’s Christian Hawley fired a 74 to earn the first individual spot.

Will Cotter shot a 79 for Lake Norman, while Micah Moffett shot an 80 and Donnie Besecker an 81. Ben Morrison paced Statesville with a 79, while Matthew Beaver fired an 82 for Mooresville.

James Malzi shot an 82 for West Iredell.
