Pole-vaulting sweep not out of the question for Hounds
BY Brian Meadows
Statesville’s boys and girls track teams combined for six wins at last year’s North Piedmont 3A championships.
Highlighting the Greyhounds’ performance was a sweep of the pole-vaulting titles. Jordan Daywalt and Zac Vance won the girls and boys crowns with vaults of 11 feet, 6 six inches and 12-6, respectively.
Statesville pole-vaulting coach Ronnie Milam wouldn’t rule out a repeat this week in the NPC championships.
“You never know,” he said.
Daywalt, a senior, is a strong candidate to win again, and Sam Hughes is a contender to follow Vance’s footsteps. Both won the event at the Iredell County meet earlier this month.
“Sam’s got a really good shot at it,” said Milam, who also noted the improvements of Savion Nichols and Nick Martin.
“Of course, Jordan is Jordan,” he said of the reigning 3A state champion. “There’s no one close to her.”
Daywalt’s teammate, Joni Henderson, has closed the gap. She vaulted 9-6 in practice recently.
