Radicals support No. 1 billing

Being billed as No. 1 is one thing. Living up to that billing is another.

As it turned out, the Mooresville-based Radicals of the area’s Race City Volleyball Club organization did both during the course of major competition last month.

Seeded atop their division, the Radicals backed up that premier status by winning the regional tournament title in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region Gold Division within the 16-and-under class.

The triumph was used to add more support of the team’s current first-place standing within the age division.

The daylong tournament was staged at Alleghany High School in Sparta.

Players comprising the team, which is coached by current Mooresville High School head varsity volleyball coach Katie Higgins, include: Amy Shelton, Amy Deal, Heather Wagner, Alexis Compton, Rachel Wells, Molly Markley, Catherine Walters, Kristi Brown, and Morgan Harvey.

Former Mooresville High volleyball player Christen McCloud, a member of the most recent Lady Blue Devils 3A class state championship team, also serves the team as an assistant coach.

The Race City Volleyball Club is presently in its second season, based directly out of Mooresville. The club coaching coordinator is Nancy Dilks, who was the former head volleyball coach at MHS for some 26 seasons. During her time at the helm, the Lady Devils captured three state championships.

The U-16 Radicals are one of five teams within the outfit that compete on a regular basis in local and regional competitions. The players on the teams represent different school programs throughout the Mooresville and Lake Norman area.
