Raiders collect key NPC win with late-game heroics
From staff reports
OLIN — Ryan Rutten had only one hit Friday night, but it was a big one.
Rutten drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as North Iredell picked up a huge North Piedmont 3A win over visiting Carson.
The Raiders took over sole possession of fifth place in the conference with three games remaining. The NPC gets six playoff berths.
North (9-8, 7-8 NPC) entered the night in a four-way tie for fifth with Carson (8-12, 6-9 NPC), Lake Norman and West Rowan. All three lost.
Michael McNeely led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Tyler Jordan doubled to score McNeely and tie the game at 3-all.
Rutten’s hit plated Jordan for the win.
Nick Burwell, Chris Bustle, Tyler Christenberry, Aaron Johnson and Casey Pharr each had a hit for North.
Johnson pitched the top of the seventh in relief of Burwell. Johnson, who struck out two, collected the win.
Burwell pitched six innings for a no decision. He allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk and struck out four.
