North Iredell flirted with disaster Friday, but Aaron Johnson wasn’t about to blow a rare save opportunity.

Johnson calmed down after a shaky start to the seventh inning, and the Raiders held on to beat Statesville 5-3.

With North nursing a 5-2 lead, Raiders coach Matthew Poole sent Johnson to the mound for the Greyhounds’ last at-bat. The ace walked two of the first three batters he faced. Coupled with Jimmy

Jordan’s single, Statesville quickly loaded the bases.

“I just tried to stay focused and concentrate on the mitt,” Johnson said afterward. “I didn’t have any control tonight, at all.”

Poole sensed as much and made a visit to the mound. Johnson responded with poise. He struck out three of the next four batters to seal the win for the Raiders (8-7, 6-7 NPC).

“He got it done,” Poole said.

Six of the Raiders’ 10 batters recorded a hit. Johnson had a pair, including a triple in the third inning. Ryan Rutten’s RBI single plated Johnson for a 2-0 lead.

Tyler Jordan and Tyler Christenberry each drove in a run, and Nick Burwell recorded a double.

“We’re hitting all through the order,” Johnson said. “It’s a big change from the start of the season.”

Brett Earnest pitched four innings for the win. He gave up one run on three hits and two walks.

David Moose pitched well enough to win for Statesville, but he didn’t get much help from his defense. Moose surrendered seven hits and four walks while striking out four.

“We felt like we had a good chance,” Moose said. “I was going to come out and throw strikes. … We just didn’t come out with the intensity we needed.”

The Greyhounds’ eight errors didn’t help. Three of those came during the fourth inning as North stretched its lead to 4-1.

That proved to be more than enough of a cushion, although Poole was disappointed about leav-ing the bases loaded in the first and seventh innings.

“It could have been a lot more lopsided if we’d have actually hit with two outs,” Poole said.

Jordan led Statesville (2-13, 1-12 NPC) with two hits. Moose and Brad Dillard each drove in a run.
