Raiders move closer to playoff berth
By BRAD NORMAN
North Iredell is back on track for the 3A playoffs.
Lauren Carter and Kawoni Revels are a big reason why.
Carter sent Wednesday’s game against East Rowan to overtime with a spectacular late goal, and Revels eventually preserved the 2-1 victory by stopping a penalty kick with less than two minutes remaining.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Raiders (8-7 overall, 7-7 North Piedmont 3A) and nearly assures them a playoff berth.
North will make the playoffs unless East Rowan (6-11 overall, 6-10 NPC) defeats both Northwest Cabarrus and Statesville next week and the Raiders lose all of their remaining four games, which includes a contest against South Rowan (2-11-1).
“Coach (Tim) Watson pressured us the whole time,” Revels said. “He kept saying, ‘playoffs, playoffs, playoffs.’ We knew what was at stake.”
North persevered despite getting three yellow cards, including one that led to the penalty kick in overtime. Each team had more than 10 fouls.
“There were more yellow cards in the first half than I’ve seen all year,” Revels said. “Sometimes you just have to get physical.”
Carter drew most of the attention from East Rowan, getting defended closely and facing double teams throughout the game.
But 45 seconds after the Mustangs scored, Carter worked her way into the box going right, then quickly reversed direction and blasted a shot across her body with her left foot that barely squeaked under the crossbar.
“I knew it was going to be close,” Carter said. “Thankfully it grazed the bottom of the crossbar and went in.”
In overtime, Carter got behind the defense and drew the keeper out. She slipped a pass to wide-open freshman Mandi Hager, who hit the post. The ball came to rest directly on the goal line, and Hager beat the keeper to the ball and slipped it in.
“I saw the ball, and I kind of laid there on the ground and hoped someone would get it,” Carter said. “Mandi came through for us.”
