SOFTBALL: North Iredell 8, Mooresville 1

Raiders take step forward

By Brad Norman

North Iredell junior Kasey Talley is one of the few remaining players from last year’s softball playoff squad.

She thinks the Raiders, despite a slow start this season, could make a return trip to the 3A playoffs. Especially after a performance like Friday’s.

Talley went 3-for-3 and Heather Nellis cruised on the mound as the Raiders picked up a critical 8-1 win over Mooresville.

The win gave North (3-9 overall, 3-7 North Piedmont 3A) a season sweep over the Blue Devils (3-6 overall, 3-6 NPC).

“We’re getting there,” Talley said. “I think playing under the lights has energized us. We’re playing much better.”

Talley also made the catch of the night, snagging a line drive to center field with an underhand scoop while running full speed.

“I was a little skeptical about that,” she said with a grin. “I’m afraid to dive for those because nobody is behind me, but I just stuck my glove out and it went in.”

With solid defense behind her, Nellis controlled the game on the mound. She allowed four hits and a run while striking out 10 batters. Of her 89 pitches, 70 were strikes.

“That was Heather’s best game of the season,” Raiders coach Kim James said.

Kaci Williams, who plays mainly on junior varsity, was called up for the game and delivered with three hits. She also started North’s four-hit fifth inning with a first-pitch double to the wall.

Nellis followed Williams with a single, and Rebecca Burris drove Williams home. Nellis later scored on Elisha Clutter’s single, which gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead and plenty of breathing room.

Down 8-0 entering the seventh, Mooresville’s Hope Smith smashed a double and A.J. Campbell followed with a single. Autumn Bryant drove in Smith, but Nellis struck out the final two batters for the victory.

“We’ve done some good things and we’ve shown a lot of growth this year for being so young,” Blue Devils coach Ashley Kelly said. “But they let themselves down (Friday). We got too down on ourselves.”
