Retirement quiets Miller

Soft-speaking Don Miller has said his final words as the president of Mooresville-based Penske Racing.

Miller, who has been President of Penske Racing South, Inc., since the organization was established nearly 20 years ago, is retiring from his position after spending those past two decades at the highest level of professional stock car racing. The announcement of Miller’s departure came as Penske Racing made official release of personnel changes in continued preparation for the 2008 NASCAR season earlier this month.

The 68-year-old Miller, who is also the chairman of the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame located in Mooresville, has been present at Penske South during 75 victories, 95 pole positions and more than $90 million in winnings in the NASCAR Cup Series as well as NASCAR Busch and ARCA series events.

“On behalf of our 39,000 employees,’’ offered team owner Roger Penske, “I want to thank Don Miller for all he’s done for Penske Racing over the years. He’s been a partner and a great friend, and he will definitely be missed. We’re looking forward to the 2008 season, and we’re excited about the new opportunities on the challenges ahead.”

A native of Chicago who began his motorsports career as a drag racer in the 1950’s, Miller has done more than just guide one of the winning programs in racing since being a charter administrator with Penske South in 1990. He’s also a top designer who has been at the forefront developing safety measures in NASCAR.

“It’s been a pleasure,” assured Miller, “and an honor to help lead Penske Racing. Under Roger’s direction, the organization has seen tremendous growth, and I’m proud of all that we accomplished.”

Miller is also a well-known personality throughout the immediate Mooresville area as well. He annually provides the welcoming and closing remarks in the N.C. Auto Racing Hall of Fame induction ceremony that takes place downtown each October. His ties to the community run deep as evidenced by his close association with the Stocks for Tots event held around each Christmas and his contributions to the Stop Child Abuse Now program in the surrounding area.

This year, Miller was selected as one of three finalists for the initial NASCAR Home Depot Humanitarian Award. During the season-ending ceremonies conducted in New York, Miller won the award for his efforts of Stocks for Tots and SCAN.

Local-based Penske Racing remains one of the most successful teams in the history of all pro sports. Competing in a variety of disciplines, cars owned and prepared by Penske Racing have 295 major race wins and 21 national championships to their credit.

The team will field three entries in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series next season, including the No. 2 Dodge piloted by 2004 Cup Champion and Mooresville resident Kurt Busch. Other drivers include Lake Norman’s Ryan Newman in the No. 12 Dodge, and the No. 77 Dodge with former Indianapolis 500 and three-time IndyCar Series Champion Sam Hornish Jr., making his full-season stock car racing debut.
