Senior center warms up for table tennis tourney

Mooresville’s Gerard Schreuders still swings a mighty mean table tennis paddle.

He will be among those providing proof of just that as he is expecting to be in the field for both the singles and doubles portions of the scheduled 2008 Spring Table Tennis Tournament taking place early next month.

The Statesville Table Tennis Club, of which Schreuders is a member and ambassador, will be conducting the open event available to any and all wishing to participate. The competition will take place at the Iredell Senior Center in Statesville on March 8.

It is an open-invitation affair, meaning that all wishing to participate regardless of age, gender and experiences, are not only invited but also encouraged to compete.

Cost of participating is only $5 each, with full-time students being charged only $2 to compete. Tournament play will get underway the day of play at 9 a.m. sharp.

Format for play will follow a round-robin schedule, meaning all in the field will be assured of an ample number of matches. Singles and doubles play is scheduled to take place.

Trophies will be awarded to the winners of the various age and gender divisions. The number of classifications will be based on the number of total entries.

Entry forms are available now and can be obtained at the host Iredell Senior Center, at 344 E. Front St., Statesville, or by contacting Schreuders at 704-799-1133.
