Freshman Hannah Mack spotted the hole in the defense and fed fellow freshman Courtney Smith for a beautiful one-touch goal that started the second-half scoring barrage in Mooresville’s 8-1 win Monday over North Iredell.
The Blue Devils, nursing a 2-0 halftime lead, scored five goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half against the depleted Raiders (4-5 overall, 3-5 NPC).
With other freshmen also making notable contributions, the future looks bright for the Blue Devils (11-1 overall, 8-1 North Piedmont 3A). The present could be pretty special as well.
“Certainly, as they produce, I think about what they’re going to be like in the next couple of years,” Mooresville coach Steve Stith said. “But I’m very excited about the present. It’s good to see some offensive punch. We know that if we’ve got someone, let alone two players, that can put the ball in the net, we have a chance in most every game. That’s exciting.”
Smith had a hat trick while Mack and senior Emmie Tyson chipped in with two goals apiece. That was more than enough for Mooresville, ranked No. 6 in the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association 3A state poll.
“It took us a while to get going, but we’ve worked it around well this year,” Tyson said. “We’ve even had defenders score for us, so that’s huge.”
Lauren Carter scored the lone goal for North, breaking through the Blue Devils defense in the final minutes and placing her shot just beyond the keeper’s reach. But the Raiders faced an uphill battle from the start due to three missing starters.
“If I had my full roster, I think it would have been a little different,” North coach Tim Watson said. “I’m not sure we’d win, but it wouldn’t be (8-1). But you can’t say ‘what if,’ all you can do is deal with what you got.”
Kawoni Revels recorded 31 saves in goal for North, the last one coming on a penalty kick.
“She was amazing,” Watson said. “I’d say almost 25 percent of the saves were one-on-one saves. She proved her mettle, we just kept breaking down at other positions.”
