Special Olympics sends soccer team to state games
SOLN, in its inaugural season, was excited according to program organizers over the opportunity to send its first-ever soccer team to the Fall State Games that took place on the campus of High Point University.
The SONC State Games featured competition in bocce and golf and as well as soccer, with opening ceremonies unfolding in the Mills Athletic and Convocation Center at HPU.
As for the Lake Norman program, it put on the field a team of seven area athletes comprising an entry in the soccer competition. The team consisted of players Tina Brown, Stephen Morley, Laura Portanova, Brianna Reed, Branson Severt, Justin Teague and Matt Walton, with Larry Portanova serving as the squad’s head coach.
All associated with the SOLN representatives wound up flying sky high while managing to keep their feet planted solidly on the ground after they ended up prevailing in each of their three matches played during the course of the State Games’ opening-day schedule.
Despite the team’s inexperience in the competition, the local outfit played like veterans in polishing off the three-game hat trick of decisions.
As a result of that initial strong showing, the local squad was then bumped up into a tougher division of competition for play during the course of the second day’s medal rounds. There, the SOLN squad continued to make itself known by fashioning an overall fourth-place finish in the field of entries, most of them representing much more established programs.
On a much more local level, the Special Olympics of Lake Norman staged its own edition of Local Fall Games that took place in the gym in the War Memorial Building. Athletes attending that attraction participated in basketball skills, target passing, 10-meter dribble and the spot shot.
Mooresville schools participated with a total of 60 athletes in the field. The morning’s competition was followed by a catered pizza lunch before all involved in the affair were returned to their respective schools.
The Lake Norman Special Olympics athletes competing in all of the events held during the year provided the local organization with a solid start in what was just its first full year of fielding entries.
The SOLN welcomes any and all interested new athletes to the program as well. Coaches are also needed to help expand the program in order to allow it to accommodate the growing number of athletes. Volunteers and additional supporters are also being recruited.
For more information on coaching or participating in any capacity, all interested are urged to contact David Cooper, local coordinator, at 704-662-6684.
