GIRLS SOCCER: Statesville 3, Mooresville 2

Statesville grabs big win over Blue Devils

By Brad Norman

With her blazing speed, Statesville sophomore Sarah Ann Waugh only needs a tiny sliver of space to make good things happen.

Waugh made the most of her few good looks Monday against Mooresville, scoring once and adding two assists as the Greyhounds defeated the Blue Devils 3-2 for their signature win of the season.

“We’ve been close in a lot of games, but we never were up two goals like we were (Monday),” said a jubilant Statesville coach Jennifer Husbands, who led the celebratory charge onto the field when the final whistle blew. “That’s always a confidence booster.”

The loss was the third this year for Mooresville (14-3 overall, 11-3 NPC) and second in a row. The Blue Devils, ranked No. 8 in the state among 3A teams in the N.C. Coaches Poll, lost 3-2 to Lake Norman last week.

“We’re probably a little bit overrated as far as the polls go, and that doesn’t mean much this time of year,” Blue Devils coach Steve Stith said. “We were totally flat and there wasn’t a lot of desire. Statesville is always up for playing us, and they played great. This could be one of those losses that comes back to help us again in some weird way.”

With Statesville down 1-0, Waugh finally got the ball with space in front of her near the sideline 25 minutes in. She outraced a defender toward the goal and forced keeper Alicia Danenhower to creep forward, then slipped a pass to Storm Mayberry, who had a wide-open look.

Waugh’s second assist came in the second half with Statesville (9-6-2 overall, 9-5 NPC) up 2-1. She was double-teamed in the box near the sideline and, with seemingly no open space, broke for the corner and fired a cross to Mary Chandler Armistead, who directed it into the goal.

“That’s happened a lot before, and I’m usually able to get the cross off,” Waugh said. “Mary Chandler came up huge.”

Mooresville’s Courtney Smith scored her second goal with less than two minutes remaining, but Statesville’s defense held after that.
