Strong day on the course doesn’t net golf team the result it wanted

Despite strong performances by John Lewis (77) Ben Morrison (77), Dalyn Bellingham (78) and Jimmy Sappenfield (80), Statesville gave up ground in the final North Piedmont 3A golf standings.

The Greyhounds posted a four-player total of 312 Thursday during the NPC championships at Warrior Golf Club. They led Northwest Cabarrus by 11 strokes for third place entering the tournament but wound up netting the fourth seed for the 3A Midwest Regional on May 5 because the Trojans carded a 300 at Warrior GC.

“We set a goal for 310,” Statesville coach Ted Crowley said. “We were very close to it … and to (fall behind Northwest Cabarrus) shooting that, I was shocked.”

Next up for Statesville is Tuesday’s Iredell County Championships at Fox Den Country Club.
