Reliever Tanner Stroud performed brilliantly in a tight spot Tuesday during Statesville’s 7-5 loss at Lake Norman.
With the bases loaded and Statesville nursing a 5-4 lead, Stroud left his post at shortstop to relieve starting pitcher Brent Daino. Stroud struck out Josh Hennessee on five pitches to record the third out and get the Greyhounds out of a huge jam.
It was the only batter Stroud faced, because Statesville coach Chad Parker did not send him back to the mound in the sixth inning, when the Wildcats scored three runs on two hits to rally to victory.
“I was afraid to stay with him,” Parker said. “He’s been a little behind. He’s had a little bit of arm trouble, so I didn’t want to push him too much.
“We play each one to win, but then again I need to have him for the games we’ve got left, not just (Tuesday). … I need him for 24 games next year, and I want to see him be able to pick up his grandkids.”
