Struggling Hounds keep battling
By Brian Meadows
Statesville nearly canceled the 2008 softball season because the team didn’t have enough players. Several late additions helped keep the program going, even though coach Bobby Morrison had reservations due to the players’ inexperience.
“I was kind of hesitant at first, knowing the quality of teams that we have in our conference,” Morrison said.
Statesville remains winless, but Morrison sees progress in his players, who haven’t thrown in the towel.
Nikki Speaks improved her proficiency at catcher, Morrison noted, and his daughter, Amanda, and Megan Bustle are providing some punch with their bats.
“There are times when I want to pull my hair out, but there’s some times where I see them make a play that they’ve been working on and they get excited, they cheer for each other, and it’s enjoyable,” he said. “They’re willing to work hard, and that’s all I can ask for.”
A travel-ball player, Bustle is pitching out of necessity for Statesville, and Morrison commended her for throwing strikes. “If I could play her at her natural position, she’d probably be all-conference,” he said.
