Talbert, Segue receive tennis recognition

Mooresville players were among those singled out for special selection during the course of earlier this winter’s annual North Carolina Tennis Association’s annual awards luncheon as part of North Carolina’s 2008 Tennis Weekend.

The recognition bestowed upon local youth players Kathryn Talbert and Dillon Segue both came during the official ceremonial luncheon held in the Pinehurst Resort’s Carolina Hotel.

The awards presentations came during a full schedule of such accolades as the NCTA made its yearly release of those players selected to receive any of the number of coveted honors in a host of categories.

In Talbert’s case, she was named the 2007 James Leighton Junior Female Tennis Player of the Year.

Talbert, currently 16 years of age and a recently-enrolled junior at Lake Norman High School, earned the distinction following a busy year in which she competed in some 30 events in the Girls 18’s Division. She constructed a record of 81-27 that included the claiming of numerous singles and doubles titles.

Talbert won the singles crown at the Southern Spring Closed Championships, singles at the September Bullfrog Southern Closes Section Designated, singles at the Winter Southern Closed Championships, singles and doubles trophies from the seventh annual Midcourt Cup, and singles and doubles at the Tar Heel Qualifier.

She is currently ranked number on in the Girls 18 Division in the state and the region and is ranked in the top 50 in the same age class on a national level.

As for Mooresville’s Segur, he was among two recipients of the Hal Southern Junior Male Tennis Sportsmanship Award for the Boys 16s Division. He shared that right with a fellow player from the Charlotte area.

The North Carolina Tennis Association is a non-profit organization and a state affiliate of the United States Tennis Association in North Carolina. The NCTA was founded in 1973 and since that time has focused on a single mission: To promote and develop the game of tennis in the state. The office is headquartered in Greensboro.
