SOFTBALL: North Iredell 7, Lake Norman 0

Talley, Raiders roll past playoff-bound Wildcats

By Brian Meadows

MOORESVILLE—North Iredell scored twice in the first inning Friday and coasted from there, spoiling Lake Norman’s Senior Day with a 7-0 win.

Heather Nellis struck out six and her defense was nearly flawless behind her to assist in the shutout.

“We put it all together today,” Raiders center fielder Kasey Talley said.

The junior did more than her fair share. Talley drove in two runs and scored three. Including two infield singles, the speedster was 4-for-4 at the plate. She reached base on an error in her fifth at-bat.

In all, North racked up 13 hits. Taylor Cartner, Meredith Hill and Emily Riddle delivered two apiece, and Elisha Clutter recorded two RBIs.

Lake Norman starting pitcher Jennifer Stogner exited after the fourth inning, having allowed five runs — two earned — on nine hits.

“She’s good about not letting things get to her,” said Katheryn Hauser, Lake Norman’s only senior. “She’ll be fine.”

Riddle led off the first with a single. Talley followed with another single, which plated Riddle when the ball was misplayed in left field. Talley eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Wildcats, who collected two hits from Sara Marshall, couldn’t dig themselves out of the early two-run hole.

“Really the last two games we haven’t looked liked a playoff team,” Lake Norman coach Steve Rankin said.

But they are.

Regardless of what happens in Monday’s regular-season finale at Northwest Cabarrus, the Wildcats (8-11, 8-9 North Piedmont 3A) are going to the playoffs for the first time in program history. They will probably be the No. 5 seed.

Lake Norman missed the playoffs by one position in 2003 and ’04 and was a win away in 2006.

“So it’s nice to be over the hump,” Rankin said.

The Raiders (6-13, 6-11 NPC) are dealing with what-might-have-beens. They would likely be in the Wildcats’ shoes had they not let wins against Carson and Lake Norman slip through their hands earlier this season.

“There are a couple games we could’ve had,” said Talley, whose team will try to finish on a positive note Monday at home against South Rowan.
