As soon as the game against Mooresville ended, members of North Iredell’s soccer team stormed the field and pounced on keeper Kawoni Revels.
It may have been the wildest celebration ever after an 8-1 defeat.
With three starters missing, Revels turned away shot after shot during the game, amassing 31 saves in the process.
It was another sign of progress for Revels, a senior in just her second year playing between the pipes.
“She’s found a groove,” North coach Tim Watson said. “She’s played amazing recently.”
Watson told the team to charge Revels after a conversation with Jana Bell, a senior nursing a knee injury.
“Kawoni worries more about the scoreboard than her successes,” Watson said. “On the bench, Jana said, ‘No matter how good Kawoni’s doing, she’s going to feel like she bombed because of the score.’
“So we basically dog-piled Kawoni at the end and let her know we appreciate everything she’s done for the team.”
