CONOVER - Darrell Dietz says he struggles to hit a motionless golf ball.
That’s why watching golf trick shot artist Chuck “The Hitman” Hiter on Tuesday was just amazing.
“He must be in great physical shape,” Dietz said. “And, he’s got a lot of free time on his hands.”
Dietz watched Hiter’s hourlong show with several hundred other impressed onlookers.
This was Hiter’s second appearance at the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn presented by Kia Motors.
Hiter began by hitting golf balls off of four various sized tees — while balancing one foot on about a three-foot tall pole.
The show only got more impressive from there. Hiter’s trick shots included:
• Hitting drives while squatting down. When that didn’t earn much applause, Hiter threw the ball between his legs, hitting the ball in the air.
• Hitting drives while standing up and throwing the ball through his legs and behind his back.
• A drive hit as Hiter kneeled on one knee as his assistant, “Perry,” held the tee.
• Bouncing a ball off a slanted block, through his legs, off another block several feet away, and hitting the ball in the air as it came back at him.
• Taking swings with a nine-foot driver off several different-sized tees.
• Hiter balancing on a basketball that sat on a bucket and hitting a series of balls on different tees.
• Hitting a “driver,” that consisted of a rope with a driver head at the end.
• Hitting drives while balancing on a wooden board as it rolled across a wooden pipe on a table.
• Hitting two balls thrown in the air.
Hiter’s hand-eye coordination and balance thrilled Dietz’s daughter, Emily, as did the distance Hiter had on each trick shot.
Nearly all traveled at least 200 yards. Some hit the driving range netting about 250 yards away.
Emily watched the display with her brother, Ronnie.
“It was awesome,” she said.
