Trojans hand Wildcats first conference loss in three years

KANNAPOLIS — Northwest Cabarrus stunned Lake Norman 2-1 Wednesday night.
It was only Lake Norman’s second conference loss in program history.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 2 in the 3A state coaches poll, had not lost in North Piedmont Conference play since a 1-0 setback April 20, 2005, against Mooresville.
Caroline Moffett gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The senior scored in 26th minute off an assist by Jackie Weston.
Northwest Cabarrus scored in the opening minute of the second half to tie the game. The Trojans (16-3-1, 14-3 NPC) netted the game-winner in the 74th minute.
Corrine Roberts and Mollie Zimmer split time in goal for the Wildcats. Roberts turned aside both shots she faced in the first half. Zimmer made three saves on five shots.
