Vikings a part of record-breaking day on the track
By Brad Norman
Members of South Iredell’s boys and girls track teams had some of their best performances this year in the two-day Southern Piedmont 1A-2A championship meet this week.
So did the rest of the conference.
South’s girls team finished third with 76 points and the boys were fourth with 70.5 points as 11 conference records were broken.
“It was like shatter-city,” Vikings coach Brent Bustle said. “Our performance just jumped out, but so did everyone else’s. The whole conference was good.”
South junior Carly Couch set one of those new records in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 2 minutes, 24 seconds.
“It was tight,” Bustle said. “In the last 100 (meters), they were both neck and neck, and the other girl just couldn’t make it any further, she fell right before the line. Carly just outreached her.”
Senior Anthony Thwaites also set a new SPC record in the shot put, but that standard was topped later in the event.
“Thwaites also had a good day, he just couldn’t win one,” Bustle said. “He was second in the shot put, second in 100 and second in the 4x1 relay. He competed very well.”
