GIRLS SOCCER
Vikings finish a tough stretch
By Brad Norman
South Iredell’s girls soccer team has spent some quality time with the activity bus in recent weeks.
Paving work on the school’s track forced South to hit the road. The Vikings had to change scheduled home games with South Caldwell and East Lincoln to away games last week, and four of their last five contests have been away.
“When they were working on the track, we couldn’t walk on it,” senior sweeper Rachel Gibson said. “So we’ve been traveling a lot. It’s rough on that bus.”
It appeared the Vikings would have to play Southern Pied-mont 1A-2A foe Lincolnton on the road for the second time this season, but they were able to push that back one day and keep it at home.
“We originally had a lot of home games during that time, but with the work on the track, we ended up with a lot more away games,” senior keeper Anne Kelly said. “It’s just something we have to deal with.”
And it’s something they’ve tried to make the most of.
A young team with several new players, the Vikings have used the long bus trips to and from campus as an opportunity to build camaraderie.
“This year, coach (David) Basinger decided the team has to ride back on the bus from away games instead of riding back with their parents,” Kelly said. “So it’s a big team bonding thing we’ve been doing. We’re together pretty much all the time, and it works pretty well.”
With team bonding comes a better, more cohesive product on the field. The Vikings’ communication has drastically improved.
“One thing that we have a very bare minimum of is drama,” Basinger said. “We have such a diverse group that traveling and stopping to eat, that gives us a chance ... to grow as a team. They’re getting along, they’re improving, and that helps us on the field.”
South is 4-9-2 this season and carries a 1-3-1 SPC record into tonight’s game against North Lincoln.
All three conference losses have been by one goal, and the SPC victory was a 3-1 win against Lincolnton, the conference leader at the time.
“Our conference is a lot tougher this year,” Kelly said. “They pushed it up a notch. It’s been frustrating to lose by one goal, but you know you play well. Those goals are usually in the last couple minutes of the game.”
There is an added bonus of having a string of road games during the middle of the conference schedule, too.
South will host four of the season’s final five games, which could give the Vikings a boost in their quest to earn one of six wild-card playoff berths allotted to 2A teams.
“I’ve seen a lot of improvement this year, but we are a young team,” Gibson said. “We’re still learning how to work together, but we work well together most of the time.”
