Vikings ready to play someone their own size

South Iredell’s soccer team broke into the win column last week with an impressive 8-0 win over North Rowan.
That was the first time in six games the Vikings didn’t play a school in a higher classification.
“It was huge,” South coach David Basinger said. “Before that, we played Lake Norman, North Buncombe, Freedom, Crest and North Iredell. Everyone’s bigger than us, and they all have more experience on the field than we do.”
The Vikings had a winnable game scheduled for Thursday against West Iredell, but that was canceled due to inclement weather.
The West game was the last scheduled nonconference contest before the Vikings open Southern Piedmont 1A-2A play April 1 at Lincolnton.
“I was really going to use the West Iredell game as a barometer,” said Basinger, noting preseason conference favorite East Lincoln defeated the Warriors 1-0. “But I think the conference is wide-open early. I like our chances because we’re kind of a sleeper at this point.
“The girls are sucking it up and working hard every day. I would say we’ll surprise some people for sure.”
