The good times kept rolling Tuesday for West Iredell.
Almost everyone who batted collected a hit, and Hannah Pennell pitched another gem as the Warriors flattened North Iredell 14-0 in five innings for their sixth straight victory.
“We just came off two really big wins,” Warriors catcher Crystal Beam said. “I think we’re just pretty pumped right now.”
West stunned perennial North Piedmont 3A power West Rowan — currently third in the league — 7-3 on Friday. It followed that with a 5-3 win Saturday over Weddington, one of the state’s top 15 4A teams.
“I just think today was a sign of our confidence,” Pennell said, “because we’ve been working extra hard on our hitting.”
They knocked the cover off the ball against North pitcher Heather Nellis.
Kaylyn Chapman, Amber Miller and Kendayl Waugh led the hit parade with two apiece. Eight of the Warriors’ nine batters recorded a hit.
Chapman, Waugh and Elizabeth Walden each drove in three runs.
It was a humbling setback for the Raiders (5-11, 5-9 NPC), who lost 4-0 to West when the teams met March 14.
“You try to forget about it and let it go and then the next day at practice work harder and work on the things you missed,” said Nellis, who struck out three.
The Warriors (11-5, 9-4 NPC) sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first. Waugh’s second at-bat scored a pair but it was compliments of a North error.
The Raiders committed three errors in the first inning to fall behind 7-0. They had five for the game.
“It’s hard to catch back up from 7-0 after the first inning,” Nellis said.
Especially with Pennell mowing them down from the pitcher’s circle. The junior threw five stellar innings, striking out 12 of the 17 batters she faced and allowing no walks.
Elisha Clutter and Kaci Williams accounted for the Raiders’ two hits.
The Warriors host Northwest Cabarrus on Friday looking to avenge a 1-0 loss to the second-place Trojans and extend their streak.
“I think we can beat anybody in our conference,” Beam said, “as long as we bring our ‘A’ game and we put our minds to it.”
