BASEBALL: West Iredell 8, Statesville 4
Warriors extend streak, sweep Hounds
By Brian Meadows
Second baseman Chase LeVan doubled twice as part of a three-hit, two-RBI night Tuesday and West Iredell turned back Statesville 8-4.
Sam Laws pitched three innings of relief to earn the win.
Michael Gatton was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, and Michael Krueger and Ethan Suarez added two hits apiece for the Warriors, who won for the third time in as many games. It’s their longest win streak of the season.
“We may be hitting the ball a little better, but we’re not playing a whole lot different,” West coach Buck Gatton said. “We’re getting some confidence and some breaks to fall our way.”
The Warriors (8-13, 5-11 North Piedmont 3A) went ahead 3-2 in the top of the third on Krueger’s inside-the-park home run. The senior drove in a game-high three runs.
Statesville (2-16, 1-15 NPC) took its first and only lead in the bottom half when Brad Dillard’s rip down the third-base line plated Josh Booher and Tanner Stroud.
But West countered in the fourth with consecutive doubles by Will Feimster, LeVan, Suarez and Krueger to jump back out front for good, 6-4.
“My curveball was way off today,” said Statesville starter Brent Daino, who allowed 10 hits in six innings. “You can’t pitch a game with only one pitch — they just wait on it.”
The Greyhounds tried to rally in the fifth before Laws ended the threat with gusto. Booher and Stroud singled following Hunter Gay’s walk to lead off the inning.
Laws coaxed Dillard into a popup for the first out. No damage done.
“Wish he would have had one more hit left,” Statesville coach Chad Parker said. “That’d have been big right there.”
Laws struck out the next two he faced, stranding all three Statesville baserunners.
“He did a great job of coming back and getting out of that jam,” Buck Gatton said.
Booher, Gay and Stroud were 2-for-3, but it wasn’t enough to help Statesville avoid being swept by a West team intent on finishing strong.
“We started the season off slow,” LeVan said. “We may not be a great team, but we’re a team that’s going to win or fight you. We’re not going to give up.”
