It’s upward and ever onward for the area-based Iredell Warriors semi-professional football team.
The Warriors, comprised primarily of local and Iredell County talent, earned the right to not only advance into but also host this weekend’s semifinals of the ongoing Central Carolina Football League playoffs after easily eliminating the Carolina Bulldogs, 35-0, in quarterfinal round play last weekend.
With the win, the Warriors improved to the 10-2 level overall and remained in contention towards a successful defense of the CCFL championship they won last fall.
In the winning cause, Mooresville Senior High football product Roger Alexander played a key role from the quarterback position. He passed for more than 120 yards and three touchdowns and also added another 40 yards on the ground with another score to boot.
Alexander tossed TD passes of 16, 10 and five yards to a trio of receivers; all of the scoring throws coming in the second half. On the end of those aerials included Brian Summers, Brandon Turner and Alphonso Miller. It was part of a 122-yard passing performance for Alexander.
In the first period, Alexander punched in what at the time was the Iredell entry’s second touchdown when he called his own number and scampered 43 yards for a score.
Also for the Warriors, back Cam Simpson came up huge. He covered 123 yards on the ground and accounted for the opening touchdown on a three-year ram just two minutes into play.
Defensively, the Iredell club stymied the Bulldogs by limiting the foes to less than 95 yards of total offense and keeping them off the scoreboard completely.
Surviving the second round of the league postseason play, the Warriors merit the right to stay put at home to host semifinal play when squaring off against the Carolina Eagles this weekend seeking a berth in early next month’s CCFL championship game.
