West Iredell has named Phil Fox its new girls basketball coach. The longtime assistant replaces Jeff LeVan.
A former softball coach at West, Fox has been involved with the girls basketball program for 14 years.
“It’s something I’ve kind of been waiting on,” he said. “This is what I really want to do. It’s kind of a passion. … Hopefully everything will go well.
“So far, I think I’ve got the support of all the kids and parents on this deal.”
Fox becomes the third girls coach in three years.
West went 13-12 and lost in the first round of the 3A state playoffs to eventual champion Winston-Salem Carver two years ago, during Josh Weddington’s final campaign. The Warriors — crippled by injuries — finished 6-18 this season under LeVan, who replaced Weddington after he stepped down.
Fox hopes to get West back on track.
“There isn’t but one place to go,” he said pointedly. “They’ve got a good opportunity to do that, and there are some good kids there.”
