Warriors ‘not backing down’

West Iredell’s girls soccer team has yet to scratch the win column, but the Warriors keep plugging away, coach David Heintz said.

Opponents have outscored them 43-2 in the first eight games. Seven of those were losses, the other was a 1-1 stalemate with South Rowan.

The growing pains are linked to youth — seven or more of the team’s 11 starters are usually freshmen or sophomores — and Heintz also noted that it is normal for his team to be outsized on the field.

“Our girls are learning and they’re not backing down,” said Heintz, who highlighted the play of midfielder Taylor Branton and sophomore defenders Daniela Serna and Brenda Vargas. “Our scores are not going to indicate it quite yet, but we definitely are getting better.”
