Warriors riding high into softball playoffs
By Brian Meadows
West Iredell’s softball team opens the 3A playoffs on the road Tuesday against the top seed from the Southwestern Conference.
“If we play like we have been, and we hit when we need to, we should be pretty strong,” coach Tiffany Haynes said.
Including a 2-0 victory over North Piedmont Conference champion East Rowan, the Warriors (15-6) won 10 of their final 11 regular-season games to finish fourth in the league.
West was 5-5 (4-4 NPC) following a 1-0 loss April 3 to East Rowan.
Haynes said more emphasis on hitting drills ignited the surge.
“The first of the season, we could not hit anything,” Haynes said. “We started having a lot of hit-ting practice every practice, and I really think that helped. The defense was always there, and the pitching was always there.”
The Warriors have an eight-day layoff between Monday’s win over Carson and their playoff opener.
“That worries me a little,” Haynes said. “The girls seem pretty pumped. They’ll be ready to go.”
