Warriors suffer first loss
Perfection has finally eluded the area-based Iredell Warriors semi-professional football team.
Riding a seven-game winning streak overall that included all previous games within their Central Carolina Football League, the Warriors were stopped shy of picking up number eight following an 18-12 loss suffered near the state’s capitol to the Durham Rattlers last weekend.
With the defeat, it knocks the Warriors to the 7-1 mark as they gear up to head back onto the field this weekend.
Trailing by a two-touchdown margin that also accounted for one of the few times all season that Iredell has been behind on the scoreboard, the Warriors tried to bounce back. Short-yardage touchdown runs from back Cam Simpson just before the halftime intermission and shortly thereafter as well, respectively, pulled the guests into a 12-all tie.
The Rattlers went back ahead to stay with a TD late in the game, and a lost fumble on Iredell’s ensuing possession after using a kickoff return landing deep in Durham territory ended the visiting team’s last-ditch drive.
With his two TDs, Simpson topped the Iredell troops’ offensive charge with 89 yards.
The Warriors are back in action this weekend.
