West Iredell second baseman Mary Keever looked the ball into her glove, turned and fired to first baseman Amber Miller.
Routine play?
Ordinarily, yes. Not so much when you’re trying to put the final nail in the coffin against the team that has led the North Piedmont 3A all season.
Fielding Meagan Kluttz’s two-out grounder cleanly in the top of the seventh Wednesday, Keever helped polish off the Warriors’ 2-0 win over East Rowan.
“I was just like, ‘Relax and make the play,’ ” Keever said. “After we got the out it was just a relief.”
The win avenged a 1-0 loss earlier this season at East Rowan.
Pitcher Hannah Pennell and center fielder Kendayl Waugh each picked up two hits for West.
Pennell tossed a four-hitter and struck out eight.
West helped its ace with two defensive gems in the second inning. Waugh threw out Kluttz at third on Winter Heno’s hit to center.
Heno advanced to second base, but was caught trying to steal third moments later for the final out.
That was one of two baserunners catcher Elizabeth Walden picked off.
“I’m happy about that,” said Walden, who rotates between catcher and shortstop with Crystal Beam. “I had yet to throw out anybody this season.”
The Warriors (12-6, 10-5 NPC) jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom half on a fielder’s choice generated by Keever. Beam, who led off with a single, scored from third by beating the throw to the plate.
Brandi Franklin’s tumbling catch in left field robbed Ericka Nesbitt of a hit in the sixth and prevented East Rowan from placing the tying run on base.
“That was phenomenal,” Walden said.
West tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an errant throw to first base.
“It’s nice to beat the No. 1 team,” Walden said.
Losing two of their last three games, the Mustangs (14-3, 13-2 NPC) aren’t alone at the top anymore. They are tied for the conference lead with Northwest Cabarrus. They host the Trojans tomorrow.
“Friday was going to be big no matter what,” said East Rowan coach Mike Waddell, whose team won the first meeting 3-2 in 9 innings. “Now it’s whoever wants it more.”
