West’s usually strong track and field program is a work in progress this season.
“We’re having to rebuild,” said Robert Thompson, the team’s coach. “Points that we used to be able to count on without any problems, now we’re not able to because we don’t have the kind of people we’ve had in those positions before. We’re awful young.”
A bright spot has been the performance of Quan Rucker. The junior won the 400-meter run in each of the Warriors’ first two meets this season.
Potential abounds on the girls squad, particularly in sprints with the additions of Terrill and Sherrill Satterfield and Brianna Renwick. Senior Liz Hall provides veteran leadership, and “she’s going to be pretty tough in the long jump,” Thompson said.
