One of the premier county coaching positions remains vacant, but an end to the search may be in sight.
Assistant Principal Ellyn Gaither said West Iredell is “pretty close” to naming its next volleyball coach.
“We’re looking within the next month,” Gaither said. “We’ve got about three or four (candidates) in the working, but nothing definite yet.”
To the chagrin of some, Gaither isn’t one of those in the running to succeed Kelly Burdeau, who is now at Mooresville High. Gaither said school district policy prohibits administrators from coach-ing.
“Even though the girls heckle me about it every single day,” Gaither joked, “I can’t do it because I’m in administration.”
Fittingly, Gaither is part of the selection process in determining who will inherit the program, which has five regional finals appearances in the last 10 years. She guided the Warriors to four of those, in addition to a 2A state runner-up finish in 2002, before stepping down two years later.
Burdeau took over for Gaither in 2005. The Warriors were 72-11 under Burdeau’s direction. They finished 28-5 last fall after losing a close five-game match to Greenville Conley in the 3A state championship.
