Jared Thompson’s football career is expected to continue at Elon.
His father, West Iredell assistant football coach Robert Thompson said the senior has been awarded a Teaching Fellows Scholarship, which he will apply at Elon University.
“He’s going to play football,” Robert said. “We’ve been talking to them all spring. … He was there for an official visit in February.”
A 6-foot-4, 194-pound signal caller, Jared completed 127 of 231 passes for 1,583 yards with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions as a senior. In previous seasons with the Warriors, he played defense.
Jared may not end up playing quarterback for the Phoenix, his father said, noting the potential of moving to a tight end.
With Southern Conference wins over Wofford and Georgia Southern, Elon finished 7-4 last sea-son and ranked in the top 25 in the Football Championship Subdivision.
“The program is on the rise,” Robert said. “They’re starting to play a great brand of football. (Jared) is looking forward to it.”
