MOORESVILLE — Lake Norman’s girls soccer team avoided a hiccup Wednesday against Statesville, just two days after taking over sole possession of first place in the North Piedmont 3A with its victory over Northwest Cabarrus.
“Our goal is to win every game, do our best, and not let down,” defender Meghan Kos said.
The Wildcats defeated Statesville 3-0 on the strength of two Caroline Moffett goals.
Moffett scored twice late in the second half to give third-ranked Lake Norman (9-0-1, 7-0 NPC) the breathing room it needed to remain unbeaten.
“We haven’t faced a team this year as fast as Statesville,” Lake Norman coach Jon Mertes said. “I was amazed at their entire team speed.
“As soon as we got the ball, they closed us down real quick and it created some problems for us. The score could have easily been 1-1 there at the end instead of 3-0.”
Trailing 1-0 at the half, Statesville kept pressing for the equalizer. The Greyhounds threatened to get it, too, in the 65th minute but the Wildcats thwarted an offensive attack with their fourth and final save.
Storm Mayberry’s shot — set up by Sarah Ann Waugh — didn’t have enough on it to get by the goalkeeper.
The missed opportunity proved costly. Four minutes later Moffett headed in a Lauren Vawter corner kick for the first of two insurance tallies.
Moffett latched onto a loose ball near midfield in the 74th minute and drove hard on net for her second goal, which put the game out of reach.
Jackie Weston’s goal, assisted in the 21st minute by Sarah Tang, gave Lake Norman a 1-0 lead, but not before Statesville (5-5-1, 4-4 NPC), which collected seven saves from Natalie Stein, got the first good look of the night.
Waugh’s dish in front of the net found Heather Wilemon, but the sophomore’s chip shot narrowly missed ducking in between the pipes.
“I felt like I had it,” Wilemon said, “but I think I put too much on it.”
Waugh, a talented goal scorer, had only one shot on frame, and Kos said limiting her attempts was part of their game plan.
“We didn’t want her to turn with the ball and run at us,” Kos said.
