MOORESVILLE—Will this be the year Lake Norman’s girls soccer team advances beyond the quarterfinals of the 3A state playoffs?
With Wednesday night’s 1-0 victory over Southwest Guilford, the Wildcats earned another crack at it.
“We take it one game at a time,” junior defender Tara Johnson said.
“That’s how you’ve got to play,” backline teammate Meghan Kos chimed in.
It marks the third time in as many seasons Lake Norman (23-1-1) is one of the final eight teams standing. The Wildcats battle unbeaten Marvin Ridge (20-0-1) next for the program’s first berth in the semifinals.
Hannah Graham booted in the game-winning goal midway through the second half and Corrine Roberts and Mollie Zimmer combined for the shutout against Southwest Guilford (12-6-5).
“I can’t be more pleased with the heart and how my players played,” Lake Norman coach Jon Mertes said.
Shots on goal favored Lake Norman 15-4, but no one scratched until Graham scored with 19 minutes, 10 seconds left.
Johnson uncorked a free kick from midfield that landed in the center of the box. The ball trickled over to the left side to a charging Graham, who one-timed it past Southwest Guilford keeper Chelsea Brewer.
“I usually try for the back post (on free kicks),” Johnson said. “… And Hannah, she’s great when it comes to running onto it and putting it in the back of the net.”
Zimmer made two saves in the final 10 minutes to preserve the win. She relieved Roberts, who suffered a leg injury on a Southwest Guilford shot that rang off the crossbar in the 59th minute.
“She stepped up,” Kos said of Zimmer. “I’m proud of her.”
Lake Norman had the first great scoring chance of the night moments after kickoff. Sarah Tang faked a free kick and continued her run. Lauren Vawter took the kick and played it ahead to Tang, but Tang’s shot was turned aside by a Southwest Guilford defender hugging the goal line.
Lake Norman provided the bulk of the offensive pressure from that point forward.
“We jumped on them from the very beginning,” Mertes said, “and we didn’t let down for 80 minutes.”
