Wildcats do the little things in NPC win

Garrett Braun delivers a pitch during Lake Norman’s North Piedmont 3A meeting Wednesday with North Iredell. Braun, one of the Wildcats’ top pitchers last season, was making his first start on the mound this season after being hampered by an injury. The senior right-hander allowed three hits and struck out four batters in 3 2-3 innings as the Wildcats won 4-3.

Lake Norman’s bats just couldn’t catch up to Aaron Johnson’s fastball, so the Wildcats did the next best thing to get on base.

Two perfect bunts led the way to two late runs and the Wildcats prevailed 4-3 over North Iredell in eight innings Wednesday.

“This was a big one,” Lake Norman coach Robert Little said. “I’m proud of the boys. They’re getting better.”

The win pulled the Wildcats (5-8 overall, 3-5 North Piedmont 3A) into a tie for sixth place in the conference with the Raiders (5-5 overall, 3-5 NPC) nearly halfway through the season.

It didn’t come easy as Johnson, North’s senior ace, controlled most of the ballgame until the fifth inning.

Lake Norman’s Shane Denton led off the fifth with a walk, and Nick Keith and Josh Hennessee dropped perfect sacrifice bunts that ended up as base hits. After Nick Lomascolo’s bunt produced an out, pinch hitter Joe Faist pulled back on a bunt attempt and ripped a single to score two runners and give Lake Norman a 3-2 lead.

North Iredell’s Tyler Christenberry scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to tie it, but the Wildcats quickly regained the lead. Jordan Farrell hit an infield single off Brett Earnest in the eighth that drove in a run, and Lomascolo was tremendous in relief for the Wildcats.

The junior lefty pitched the final three innings, striking out eight batters and earning the win.

“We were going to save Nick for Northwest Cabarrus (on Friday),” Little said. “When it got tight like that, we had to bring him in. We had to get this win. It’s definitely a long road still, but we have 10 conference games left, so we could finish 13-5 in the conference.”

Johnson took a no-decision for the Raiders. He pitched seven innings and struck out 10 batters while unofficially hurling 122 pitches.

“You hate that for Aaron,” North coach Matthew Poole said. “When you’re not great, you have to make all your basic plays. You have to do that to have a shot at winning, and we just didn’t do that.”
