Wildcats have high hopes on the tennis court

Lake Norman’s boys tennis team reached the quarterfinals of the 3A dual-team playoffs last year before losing to eventual state champion Statesville.

The Wildcats might be poised to go even further this time around. At 7-0, with wins over some strong competition, their season couldn’t have gotten off to a more promising start.

“They’re doing pretty well, but it’s a long season,” coach Chris Carroll said. “We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.”

Lake Norman’s record includes an 8-1 victory over Newton-Conover, the 2007 2A state runner-up, and a 9-0 sweep of Statesville.

The Wildcats’ top five singles players — juniors Andrew McKinnon, Trey McKee, Tim Johnson and Matt Dowell and senior Taylor Burton — are undefeated.
McKinnon, the top seed, has rarely been challenged.

“He’s very smart, places the ball well and has a strong serve,” Carroll said. “He’s overpowering people right now.”
