Sophomore Paul Larsen was afforded the opportunity to compete in Dave Telep’s Carolina Challenge on Saturday in Cary.
Telep is the national recruiting director for Scout.com, and his invitation-only camp for the top 80 non-senior basketball players in North Carolina was observed by a congregation of college scouts.
“This was good for him,” Lake Norman coach Brandon Jolly said.
Maybe not so much for Larsen’s body, though.
The 6-foot-6 post player, who led the Wildcats this season in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and field-goal percentage, took a nasty spill toward the end.
“He went up to dunk and had his legs cut out from under him,” said Jolly, who spoke to Larsen by phone Saturday night. “He fell, sprained his wrist and got a concussion. But he was OK. He went to the hospital, and they released him.”
Going strong to the basket and getting airborne left him vulnerable, but such aggressiveness is a hallmark of Larsen’s game.
Telep can attest.
“Paul was one of the guys who played his tail off, a tough, competitive kid who rebounds with pride,” Telep said. “I thought his day was filled with hustle and toughness. We’ll be excited to have him back next year.”
