MOORESVILLE—Timmy Johnson burned the midnight oil Monday, browsing information about basketball recruit Verdell Jones, who committed to Indiana University earlier in the day.
His loyalty is timeless. Johnson sported his white IU baseball cap Tuesday afternoon as Lake Norman’s boys tennis team hosted St. Stephens in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
“I’m a big fan. Hoosiers 24-7,” said the junior, a native of the Hoosier state. “Indiana basketball is just everything to me. There’s Indiana basketball, then tennis, then everything else.”
Helping the Wildcats reach the second round of the playoffs took precedence Tuesday, and Johnson and the Wildcats comfortably dispatched St. Stephens 9-0.
Andrew McKinnon, Trey McKee, Johnson, Matt Dowell, Taylor Burton and David Dyer all won in straight sets. The unbeaten Wildcats (16-0) won 72 of 86 total games in singles. McKinnon pitched a shutout, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Johnson was still playing singles when Dowell’s 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Thailand exchange student Korn Ammerrinutti gave the Wildcats the five individual match wins needed to advance. They will play either Kings Mountain or North Buncombe next Tuesday.
Johnson trailed Chris Baker 4-3 in the first set before winning 6-4, 6-0 to remain unbeaten in singles — just like Burton, Dowell, McKee and McKinnon.
“The team record goes before mine, obviously,” Johnson said, “but individually, it matters, too.”
Unforced errors on a handful of easy putaways perturbed Johnson, but he never lost focus in what turned out to be an inconsequential match.
“I used to have a bad temper, but my mom fixed that,” Johnson quipped.
Lake Norman swept doubles from St. Stephens (13-6) as well, although they weren’t necessary to play. Johnson tweaked an ankle during his match, but he was OK.
“It’s a catch-22,” Lake Norman coach Chris Carroll said. “We know we’re going to have to play doubles at some point in these playoffs, but on the other hand you risk injury by playing. We just wanted to get some practice out of it.”
