BASEBALL: Lake Norman 6, Southeast Guilford 5

Wildcats nab first playoff victory

From staff reports

GREENSBORO—Lake Norman fought off a furious Southeast Guilford rally Friday night to earn the program’s first playoff victory.

Garrett Braun, Tyler Lewis and Eric Manser each went 2-for-3 and belted a home run as the Wildcats knocked off the Mid-Piedmont Conference top seed 6-5.

“It was awesome, but it was a roller-coaster,” Lake Norman coach Robert Little said. “We tried to give it away. It came down to the very last pitch.”

With two away and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Lewis induced a groundball on a 3-2 count for the game-ending out.

Nick Lomascolo pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win. He allowed two hits and struck out 13.

Josh Hennessee and Ross Whitely combined for an inning of relief. Lewis tossed the final 2/3 of the seventh to get the save.

Southeast Guilford (19-4) sliced a 6-1 deficit to one run in its last at-bat, but the Wildcats were determined to make history and held on for the upset.

“I’m sure no one was expecting us to win,” Little said. “We definitely went in there as the underdog, but we came out victorious.”
