HIGH POINT—Look who is still playing baseball.
Lake Norman scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings and Ross Whitley held Southwest Guilford scoreless with three no-hit innings Tuesday as the Wildcats rallied to win 5-3 in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.
The Wildcats (13-13) advance to the third round with the program’s first two playoff victories under their belt. They play Friday at North Piedmont Conference champion East Rowan.
Lake Norman is on a roll and has no intention of slowing down.
“It ain’t gonna stop, that’s the thing,” first baseman Jordan Farrell smiled.
Farrell finished a home run shy of the cycle. With the game knotted a 3-all, he scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth after his leadoff triple.
Kevin Gradert was 2-for-3 and Garrett Braun, Shane Denton and Eric Manser each drove in one run.
Lake Norman needed to win its last two regular-season games just to lock up the NPC’s sixth and final playoff berth. Now it has won four straight.
“Ever since Jordan scored on the passed ball in the bottom of the seventh (to win) the North Iredell game, the momentum has been in our favor,” Whitley said.
“That sense of urgency at the end of the season has carried us these past two games,” Joe Faist added.
Faist was responsible for helping plate Lake Norman’s two runs in the sixth.
After Farrell tripled, Nick Keith drew a walk and Tyler Lewis was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Faist hit a 3-2 pitch to shortstop. The throw to the plate skipped past the glove of Southwest Guilford catcher Mitchell Frazier as Farrell slid across the plate. The error allowed a second run to score.
That was more than enough cushion for Whitley, who struck out six of the 11 batters he faced.
Whitley polished off the victory in stylish fashion. He snared a line drive to the mound for the final out, then was mobbed by his teammates as they ran out of the dugout.
“It was kind of like everything went in slow motion,” Whitley grinned. “I just reached out and grabbed it.”
