Women’s golf hosts, tops tourney

Some members of the Mooresville Women’s Golf Association wound up treating their guests better than others late last month.

Again serving as the host of the annual MWGA Member-Guest Tournament, select participants within the local group teamed up with partners to post the top showings in the two-player team best-ball affair held on the organization’s home Mooresville Municipal Golf Course.

Play in the affair consisted of 24 teams comprising three different divisions for play, with the top three teams in each flight being recognized for their efforts. In addition to team stroke play that also took into consideration the handicap of each play, various on-course events for both MWGA members and guests were also staged.

In the field’s first flight, the team made up of Sharon Pitkin and cohort Connie Crandor was tabbed as the winner following an on-scorecard tiebreaking procedure that took place. Such a draw deciding situation took place after the team consisting of teammates Jessie McNeely and Mary Ellen Williams also checked in with the same low score. Both teams turned in same scores of 12-under par 59 to force the tiebreaking procedure into play.

In third, the team compiled of Lynda Sholar and Jean Hampton used their score of 60 to take that spot outright.

It was in the affair’s second division where the best score of the day developed. The team consisting of Phyllis Hilton and daughter-in-law Margie Hilton conjured up a round of 55, 17 strokes better than par, to take that flight’s top honors by a three-stroke gap.

Placing second in the grouping was the 56 fired by the team made up of Joann Massey and Peggy Axley, while the twosome composed of Sadie Daniels and Betty Cooper logged in with a 60 that was good for outright third place.

In the third flight, three strokes once again made the difference, as the team made up of Joyce Hladik and teammate Donna Ryan fashioned a score of 60, 12 strokes better than par, to win first by itself. A tiebreaking playoff was needed to determine the final two teams after the duo of Geneva Adams and partner Winkie Powell, and the pair consisting of Linda Nichols and cart rider Pat Murray all posted the same score of 63.

In the on-course events among MWGA members, winners included Pitkin at the first hole, Sharon Williard at the sixth, and Virginia Canipe at the 12th. On the same holes among guests, those winners featured Ann DiNoto, Carolyn Davis and Blanche Cavada, respectively.
