A capacity crowd gathered at Statesville’s Herb Sampsel Gymnasium on Wednesday night to see former President Bill Clinton as he campaigned for his wife, Hillary.
Sarah Ann Waugh was one of those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of Clinton, who last held the highest office in the land when the sophomore was 8 years old.
Clinton took the stage around 11 p.m. His tardiness, spawned by multiple campaign stops around the state Wednesday, delayed Waugh’s arrival home.
“But I got my homework done,” said Waugh, who turned 16 on Thursday.
While she is two years away from becoming eligible to vote — and might not vote Democrat if she could presently — the wait was worth it.
“I’ve never seen anyone like a former president,” Waugh said. “It was a neat new experience.”
Waugh and the vast majority of her teammates on the Statesville girls soccer team are about to embark on a new experience of a different variety.
The Greyhounds (10-7-2, 10-6 North Piedmont 3A) have already guaranteed themselves a spot in the 3A state playoffs, scheduled to begin May 7.
Statesville hasn’t qualified for the playoffs in three seasons, which means this will be a first for 19 of the Greyhounds’ 20 players.
Senior Fran Armistead is the only holdover from the 2005 team. Armistead was a freshman that season, when the Greyhounds bowed out in the second round following an opening-round victory over Trinity.
“We have so much young talent,” said Armistead, who co-captains a squad featuring only three seniors and two juniors. “When I was on the (last playoff) team, I was only a freshman, and now we have freshmen and sophomores leading our team. They all step up, come out here and play to win.”
This week marks the last of the regular season, and Statesville enters it having played some of its best soccer.
Statesville stunned Mooresville, ranked No. 8 in the 3A state coaches poll, 3-2 Monday. The Greyhounds were thinking upset again Tuesday, but they lost 1-0 to second-ranked Lake Norman.
“After putting up a game like that against Mooresville, we were just exhausted, and you could see it,” said Statesville coach Jennifer Husbands, who commended her team’s effort in light of the quick turnaround. “That was a tough one, but we played awesome against Mooresville.”
If they can beat Carson and East Rowan this week, the Greyhounds would likely finish fourth in the NPC, setting up the more favorable playoff draw. The NPC’s No. 4 seed plays at Kings Mountain in the first round. Statesville tied the Mountaineers 6-6 in its season opener.
The NPC’s No. 5 seed opens on the road against the South Piedmont Conference champion, which will be fifth-ranked Marvin Ridge or sixth-ranked Porter Ridge.
Either way, “I definitely think we have a chance to make it pretty far,” Waugh said, “but we have to keep playing up to our level.”
