MOORESVILLE — Expectations are high for Lake Norman’s girls soccer team, which is why no one was beaming Wednesday after the Wildcats defeated Asheboro 3-1 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
West Iredell’s softball team opens the 3A playoffs on the road Tuesday against the top seed from the Southwestern Conference.
West’s disappointing baseball season ended Monday with a 7-4 loss to Carson. The Warriors fin-ished 8-15 (5-13 NPC).
West Iredell hurdlers could have a big day Saturday in 3A track and field West Regional at Asheville Roberson.

Despite pulling out a 12-8 win Monday over South Rowan, the Raiders will not advance to the 3A baseball playoffs.
Travis Campbell was the surprise star for North’s golf team during last week’s Iredell County championship.
Don’t be surprised if it’s someone unexpected who makes a few big plays for the Raiders during tonight’s playoff soccer game against Jamestown Ragsdale.
Jasmine Morris and Amy Shelton will both compete in two events at Saturday’s 3A track and field West Regionals at Asheville Roberson.
South Iredell was one part efficient, one part ruthless.

South Iredell sophomore Clay Brown earned a spot in the 2A state championship by shooting a 73 during Monday’s 2A Midwest Regional at Eagle Chase Golf Club.
Mooresville’s Josh Nelson broke through Monday, clinching a berth in the 3A state tournament with his play in the Midwest Regional at Jamestown Park Golf Course.
Lake Norman leapfrogged Mooresville for the lead in the NPC Wachovia Cup standings following a strong winter sports season.
Lake Norman’s girls soccer team had not lost in 46 straight conference games prior to Wednesday’s 2-1 setback against North Piedmont 3A foe Northwest Cabarrus.
Members of North Iredell’s girls soccer team know the Raiders will be the underdog in Wednesday’s 3A playoff opener against Jamestown Ragsdale.
It’s a role they became quite accustomed to this year.

Mooresville’s tennis team, which is going through a rebuilding year, has all six of its players in the 3A West Regionals.
The Blue Devils baseball team will close the NPC season with a home game tonight against West Rowan.
Like the school’s baseball team, Mooresville’s soccer team also earned the NPC’s No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
Mooresville’s boys track team is now two for two.
With a strong focus on winning the county, conference, regional and state track meets this season, the Blue Devils were dominant again in last week’s North Piedmont 3A meet victory.

With 11 players, Statesville baseball coach Chad Parker can’t shuffle the lineup much.
Statesville’s boys and girls both finished fifth Wednesday at the North Piedmont 3A track and field championships.

Lake Norman is still alive in the playoff race.
Trailing by one run with two outs in the seventh inning and its season on the line, the Wildcats clawed their way to a dramatic 5-4 win over North Iredell on Friday in a must-win game.
MOORESVILLE—North Iredell scored twice in the first inning Friday and coasted from there, spoiling Lake Norman’s Senior Day with a 7-0 win.

Northwest Cabarrus stunned Lake Norman 2-1 Wednesday night.
Mooresville dominated the boys meet and took second place in the girls meet at the North Piedmont 3A championships.
Sarah Ann Waugh recorded another hat trick Thursday as Statesville blanked Carson 4-0.
Lake Norman picked up its 20th win Thursday, defeating North Iredell 5-1 in the regular-season finale.
The SPC’s jumbled softball standings have become clearer in recent weeks. South Iredell was 5-6 in SPC play entering Thursday’s game and East Lincoln was 6-5.
South has a total of 18 representatives and relay teams set to compete in Saturday’s track 2A Midwest Regionals.
A regular season game that looked eminently winnable has turned tough for South’s soccer team. The Vikings host Cherryville (5-6-5 overall, 2-4-3 SPC) tonight, a team coming off a 1-0 win over conference leader North Lincoln.
South Iredell has sent at least one individual to the golf regionals each of the past few years. They’ll go as a team this time.
The Gridiron Cup could be shelved permanently in someone’s trophy case after this fall.

Nick Setzer and Tyler Tomlin fell one victory shy of qualifying for regionals Tuesday, when the doubles tandem lost in the NPC tennis tournament quarterfinals to Lake Norman’s Taylor Burton and David Dyer.
Jermail Rucker was one of the surprises Tuesday during the first day of the NPC track and field championships.
James Malzi finished 20th in the final North Piedmont 3A golf standings. As one of the top four individuals from a team that didn’t qualify for the Midwest Regional, Malzi punched his own ticket to the tournament.
West Iredell’s baseball team rides a three-game winning streak into Friday’s game at Mooresville.
As Monday’s 3A Midwest Regional approaches, things are already looking good for Mooresville’s golf team.
And it has nothing to do with golf itself.

Second baseman Chase LeVan doubled twice as part of a three-hit, two-RBI night Tuesday and West Iredell turned back Statesville 8-4.
Lake Norman’s Travis Taylor won last year’s Iredell County golf championship after breaking his driver.
He repeated as champion Tuesday with a broken hand.
North junior Josh McMahan, a 245-pound linebacker, took part in the Shrine Bowl combine last week.
Two-sport athlete Zach Spencer had signed to play football with Guilford College.
Travis Cartner and Jerry Widner paced the Raiders at last week’s 18-hole conference tournament. Cartner had a 92 and Widner finished with a 96.
Keeper Kawoni Revels will rejoin North for tonight’s soccer game against South Rowan after suffering a back injury.
North Iredell senior Tyler Christenberry is known as a smart, defensive-minded catcher. He calls pitches for the Raiders and teams rarely run on him due to his strong arm.
But Christenberry’s most notable contribution this year has come at the plate.

For all intents and purposes, this is a make-or-break week for Lake Norman’s baseball team.
Lake Norman’s boys golf team enters today’s Iredell County championship at Fox Den Golf Club looking to defend a couple of titles.
Lake Norman’s Matt Dowell and Timmy Johnson will play doubles together, as will Taylor Burton and David Dyer, during the North Piedmont 3A championships, which begin today at Mooresville.
One of the most highly decorated girls tennis players in the county is attending Lake Norman this semester.

After consecutive one-goal losses to Lake Norman and Statesville last week, Mooresville’s girls soccer team got back on track in a big way.
Mooresville senior Patrick Campbell was impressive again at a running event last week.
Mooresville’s baseball team, fresh off an 11-1, five-inning win Friday over Statesville, has a big road game Tuesday against South Rowan.
It was a pretty good week for Mooresville golfer Josh Nelson.
When it comes to golf, being good is a relative concept for South Iredell sophomore Clay Brown.

A capacity crowd gathered at Statesville’s Herb Sampsel Gymnasium on Wednesday night to see former President Bill Clinton as he campaigned for his wife, Hillary. Sarah Ann Waugh was one of those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of Clinton, who last held the highest office in the land when the sophomore was 8 years old.
Statesville softball coach Bobby Morrison added former Greyhound Chante Miller to his staff this season.
Despite strong performances by John Lewis (77) Ben Morrison (77), Dalyn Bellingham (78) and Jimmy Sappenfield (80), Statesville gave up ground in the final North Piedmont 3A golf standings.
Statesville’s boys and girls track teams combined for six wins at last year’s North Piedmont 3A championships.
Will Feimster drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night as West Iredell rallied to knock off Northwest Cabarrus 9-8.

MOORESVILLE—The Mooresville Blue Devils avoided a season-worst three-game skid with their come-from-behind win Tuesday, and they followed it up Friday with a convincing 11-1, five-inning romp past Statesville.

Mooresville completed its North Piedmont 3A slate of matches Wednesday with an 8-1 drubbing of West Rowan.
Statesville scored four second-half goals Thursday to pull away from West Iredell for a 5-0 win.
North Iredell’s baseball team is in need of wins as the conference season comes to a close.
The Raiders faced the same scenario last year and hope the end result is better this time around.
Defender Rachel Gibson, usually counted on to stop the opposition from scoring, got her first chance at a goal Monday against Cherryville.
The SPC tennis championships will be held Tuesday at North Lincoln, and South coach Jim McCoy has a doubles team looking to qualify for regionals for the second consecutive year.
Members of South Iredell’s boys and girls track teams had some of their best performances this year in the two-day Southern Piedmont 1A-2A championship meet this week.

North Iredell is back on track for the 3A playoffs. Lauren Carter and Kawoni Revels are a big reason why.
South Iredell demonstrated patience at the plate Monday, drawing 13 walks in a 10-5 win over Lincolnton.
Christy Plyler blasted a three-run home run Tuesday to lead Lake Norman to a 5-1 win over Mooresville.
Lake Norman scored early Tuesday and made the goal stand up in a 1-0 North Piedmont 3A win at Statesville.
Nick Matlock went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs as South Iredell topped Southern Piedmont 1A-2A foe North Lincoln 6-5 Tuesday.
Brian Romito faced just four batters over the minimum and West Iredell defeated North Iredell 3-2 on Tuesday.
Lake Norman escaped Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over West Rowan.
Statesville closed out the regular season Wednesday with a 9-0 drubbing of East Rowan.

Earlier this season, West boys tennis coach Lindsey Weycker called Peter Eller a player who could turn the program around.

It has been an uphill battle this season for West Iredell’s young girls soccer team, but the Warri-ors saw their patience pay off recently, when they defeated Carson 2-1 for their first victory.
With its 9-0 win Wednesday over Northwest Cabarrus, Lake Norman completed a perfect regular season and locked up the program’s first conference title.

A scheduling quirk has given North’s soccer team a brutal final week of the season.
Zeke Odom has excelled in the 300-meter hurdles this season after not running the event in the past.
North Iredell’s softball team experienced a swing of emotions during Friday’s doubleheader against Statesville.
The Raiders trailed the winless Greyhounds for most of the first game before receiving an emotional, unexpected phone call from assistant coach Angie Carlton.
South Iredell’s girls soccer team has spent some quality time with the activity bus in recent weeks.
Paving work on the school’s track forced South to hit the road. The Vikings had to change scheduled home games with South Caldwell and East Lincoln to away games last week, and four of their last five contests have been away.
The good times kept rolling Tuesday for West Iredell.

Lake Norman golfers occupied six of the top seven spots in the NPC standings Monday entering the last nine-hole conference match before Thursday’s 18-hole tournament championship.
The win over rival Mooresville gave the Lake Norman girls soccer team a 1½ game lead over the Blue Devils in the conference title race.
West Iredell’s prom is May 3, so Kendayl Waugh is planning accordingly. She scheduled an appointment Thursday to have her hair done the day of the prom at Scissor Happy Hair Salon.
